Phillip died of a diabetic Coma On a bus to Toronto. Passengers complained to the driver of the bus that a man was snoring extremely loud and could not be waken. The driver pulled over and when he approached Phillip the snoring had stopped and apparently along with his heart., North Bay Ontario

Owned McCarthy Bus Lines (1960-1968) in North Bay Ontario Canada.

Phillip had many business ventures over the years.Owned McCarthy Bus Lines (1960-1968) in North Bay Ontario Canada. Developed the firsts busing system with a series of routes using small Mercedes buses. In the beginning you would get on or off any where along a scheduled route. Had service garage for the buses on McIntyre St North Bay Ontario.

A bus ticket from that system is on display in the North Bay Museum. The system was sold to North Bay Transit. During that same period he operated taxi service off Main street ( we have one of the old signs), ambulance and transfer service from hospital morgues to local funeral establishments. Sold the taxi business and the province then started its own ambulance service and private services where suspended. In the seventies Phillip moved to Sudbury, Ontario were he owned the Big Nickel Supertest gas station and U Haul center until 1972 when a Tornado struck the area and destroyed the garage. Phillip hid behind the air compressor and could do nothing but watch his business blow away!

On Aug. 20, 1970, a 100-mile-an-hour tornado ripped through the northern Ontario mining town of Sudbury and the surrounding communities of Copper Cliff, Lively and Field without any warning. The 10-minute windstorm resulted in the death of six people, injured 200 and caused over $17 million in damage. It was one of the worst tornados in Canadian history.

Tornadoes rarely hit northern Ontario, so the city of Sudbury is ill-prepared for the freak storm that rips through town on Aug. 20, 1970. Scores of smashed homes are only the beginning of Sudbury's problems. As we hear from eyewitnesses in this report, the Inco copper smelter is trashed, pumping stations are out and raw sewage is polluting the drinking water. Yet the city's mayor is proud of the relief efforts already underway and the resilience of the townsfolk, who he says are "a very hardy species."

I ( Rick McCarthy) visited the next day with my Mom ,Dad and Siblings .I remember the story Grandfather told. that he had been filling a customers car with gas and was
entering the building to make change when the windows began to shack violently and it sounded like a train was going to come through the building. He remembers trying to climb behind the air compressor for shelter when it came on and scared the sh!!!! out of him. Then it hit and the building around him disappeared leaving the compressor room untouched. As it ended he came out still with the $10 bill in his hand and no customer to be found. The Tornado had taken his business and left behind raining down like snow all the remains of a shopping mall in its place. When there we collected many toys to take home. There was not much left of his garage. We found pieces of glass from his windows in telephone poles on the property and glass shards penetrated in the sides of the one U haul trailer that didn\'t blow away. Behind the garage is a series of rail tracks and rail yards that have large oil and gas storage tanks. One of the rail cars was picked up and smashed into the center of the huge tanks and in our amazement viewed the large dent it had left in it.
That was the last time I seen my grandfather because he died not long after that. The garage was rebuilt by some one else and still was there when I last seen it in 2005 while traveling from BC through to North Bay
